My October Challenge
Day 2 - week 2 of 6 am boot camp!
I have previously written of my 10 lbs of extra post marriage weight. So - I decided to get up and do something about it. No more wandering into the gym working at my own pace. No more several mile bike rides. It is time to CHALLENGE myself and push it to the limit.
I have started my 2nd week of boot camp. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday's from 6am to 7AM for 4 weeks at Freedom Park. Rain, sleet, snow, thunder, cold... every day we workout. My girlfriends Kate and Kelly are also in camp. We not only have to challenge our bodies each morning - the alarm clock is a challenge. I'm only an early morning girl when it's time to catch a flight to an exquisite location :). We also keep a food journal which has helped tremendously. Having to write down my snacks, water intake, and meals has exposed me to a new challenge in itself. I love writing down the healthy foods I eat and dread writing down the bad.
Recently in my family challenges have presented themselves. Challenges most of us will never face or even dream of having placed before us. While these challenges do not require my direct attention I have learned many lessons from these series of events. One being - don't take life for granted. I have an able body - time to use, test, and make it what I desire. My October challenge is boot camp and my alarm going off at 5:15 am.
No picture to post because it is dark at boot camp, we don't look cute all sweaty, and I would probably be required to do push ups if I was spotted with my phone. Maybe I will snap one on the last day.

Not only you should smell good.
So should your hand written letter/note.
I am obsessed with my scent - I love my perfume (Chance by Channel). It's part of my signature, or so I would like to think. I would also like to think my hand written letters also are a part of my signature - personally and professionally. I try weekly to designate time (less than 20 minutes) to write a note to those I think about. Not an email, not a text, not a phone call, but a hand written note to sit, write, and share the posetive influence a person has shown me.
Combining scent and hand written thoughts...
Magazines arive and arive and arive in the mail. I've started swipping the perfume samples from magazines on my notes. If you are going to take the time to share your thoughts in writing - make it count. Not only you can smell good, so can your labor of love and thanks.

Block party - Bluegrass - Bikes
Tuesday, September 25th
Block party in the neighborhood on Atlanta Avenue. Ben went to the Braves game with friends, Stephen and Towner. I hopped on my bike and rode with a couple friends in the neighborhood to hear bluegrass band, Packway Handle. We had lots of great food, beverages, and enjoyed our neighbors for a random Tuesday night gathering. Ben joined me for a bit after the game. Our bike rides home at night together are some of our most fond memories.
Ben used to listen to Packway Handle in college. My first trip to NYC in August of last year with Ben we saw them play in Brooklyn. We met one of the band members, Josh, and his wife. They live in our sister neighborhood so it is always a treat to see them play.

Life is precious. PLEASE READ & SHARE
Below is the story from my sister's family's site. Please read - be prepared for tears and please help if you feel moved to do so and pray pray pray for peace and guidance. The link to their site to make a donation is below their story written by her husband.
Thank you for visiting our page to learn about my Uncle, John Pangle, and his family. I know that if you are reading this page, you or someone close to you has been touched by their story.
John Pangle is my Dad's (Brad) brother. He is 53 years old and has been married to Elizabeth Kay Pangle, also 53 years old, for 29 years. They are still madly in love and and have an amazing 12 year old son, Morgan. They have been living in Central Virginia most of their lives and have resided in Faber, VA for the past five years.
In January of 2012, things began to change for The Pangles. Kay woke up one day with some short term memory loss. This led to a doctor visit and within a few short days, a diagnossis of a brain tumor. Kay and John were told that Kay had terminal stage 4 brain cancer. She had surgery shortly after the diagnosis and had some positive results. However, the tumor came back and she had a second surgery in August.
These events put a tremendous amount of stress on the family. John and Morgan put all of their energy into taking care of Kay. As her caregiver, John spent hours making sure Kay was getting the best care possible at the Emily Couric Cancer Center. John helped comfort many other patients at the center by sharing the gift of music by playing his native american flutes.
In May, the unthinkable happened. John had a routine physical which led to doctors eventually diagnosing him with terminal stage 4 lung cancer. Even after John's diagnosis, and a second surgery for Kay, John continued to spend every bit of his energy into caring for Kay and Morgan. Unfortunately, John's health has continued to deteriorate and he is tired. Kay was being cared for in a nursing home over the last 4 weeks but John can no longer take care of Morgan.
In the last three weeks, my Dad, Jeston (John's 31 year old son), and I have been working to get John's and Kay's affairs in order. They will be staying together at the Hospice for the Piedmont in Charlottesville, VA. It is a very comfortable and peaceful place where they will have rooms next to each other. John will have his flutes, guitar and violin to entertain other residents and all visitors. Their wish is for Morgan to live with me and my family in Georgia.
My wife and I are lucky enough to have a place for Morgan in our home and we brought him to Georgia on Saturday. He will be continuing his year in the 7th grade at Osborne Middle School.
We are so thankful that John was able to make the trip to Georgia this weekend and see where Morgan is going to be living and going to school. The Atlanta Braves were so kind to provide an unforgettable experience by providing tickets and a behind the scenes tour for John and Morgan. John is making the trip back to Virginia to be with Kay this week.
We ask that all of you who hear this story will pray for John and Kay as they fight this terrible disease. Please also pray for Morgan as he needs all the strength imaginable to not only deal with his parents sickness but also the challenge of living in a new home with a new family, in a new state, and attending a new school.
In addition to your thoughts and prayers, The Pangles would certainly benefit from any and all donations. Specifically for two things. First, the rooms that John and Kay will be in have standard hospital beds. John and Kay cannot lay together in one of these beds. John desperately would like to have a queen size hospital bed in his room so he and Kay can lay together whenever possible. This is very important to him and we want to do whatever we can to make that happen. These beds range from $2,000 -$4,000. Second, there will be a considerable expense ($1,000 - $2,000) to move all of Morgan's things to his new home in Georgia.
Thank you for your prayers and support.

Foster & Aunt MJ
This is a picture that I am stealing from my sister's blog. A picture of me and my youngest nephew, Foster, from our wedding rehearsal night at Brasstown Valley Resort. I love his Jon-Jon, sweet hair, and little shoulder in this pic. He was in the wedding and SHOWED OFF (all 5 of my nephews did, actually)! - more pics of his grand entrance and mode of transportation down the aisle to come.

A weekend at Lake Cooley
Two weekends ago, Ben and I headed to Lake Cooley to spend the weekend with Mama and Daddy. Keeva came with us and had the time of her life - as did Ben and I!
Friday night Grandma and Meme came over for a spaghetti dinner - Mama made her own sauce with herbs from her garden and fresh tomotoes from the Lyman farmer's market. She also made breadsticks. Dessert was made by Daddy - homemade peach ice cream - Delicious!
Saturday we woke to fresh coffee, bacon, and blueberry pancakes. We all spent the day on the boat, floating in the water, and enjoying the lake. Dump dogs of course for lunch (a hot dog joint down the street) and grilled pork chops for dinner.
Sunday we went to Daddy's country club, Links o Tryon for lunch. We had the best time and hated to leave!

Matisyahu - private concert
Thursday, August 23, 2012
Matisyahu played a private concert at our neighbor's house in her living room. She had won a national contest and we were able to attend. There were about 20 people invited. We all sat in the living room, had wine, and listened as he played an acoustic set with his guitarist. He rode in on his Harley with his 5 year old son, Shahlom.
We were all added to the guest list to his show later that night at the Masquerade. WHAT A TREAT! Check him out and the link in our local paper, Creative Loafing, about the night and to see more pictures... Matisyahu in Grant Park - Atlanta
Check out his Pandora station - you will likely hear some Bob Marley and great Reggae tunes. One of the acoustic songs played was "Sunshine." Check it out on youtube http://youtu.be/QPuU-iTIFoI

Everyone's down - St. George Island, FL
Down for a nap that is. Keeva and Ben are resting. I'm on the front porch looking at the ocean, listening to Allman Brothers pandora station, reading "My Cross to Bear." I'm glancing at our shell collection, Keeva's collar & Ben's Patagonia cap drying in the sun. Taking in the happiness of 6 years departing Charleston and moving to Atlanta. Happy Labor Day Weekend everyone. Happy Birthday to my brother, Mason. Thank God I have home in the city and a moment on an Island today while everyone is "down" to reflect and thank God.

Gluten free Pesto - Now & Later
- 2 cups of packed basil
- 2 cloves of garlic
-1/4 cup of pine nuts (walnuts are delicious too - and more cost effective)
- 2/3 cup of extra virgin olive oil
blend all ingredients together (I use my food processor) until very very fine. store in refridgerator until used. yields 1 cup of pesto.
*** As the season for growing basil comes to an end, don't let your basil leaves go to waste. You can make pesto and pour into a muffin tin lined with saran wrap. Put in freezer until pesto has frozen then you can remove from tin. Keep in freezer and on a cold winter night when you are looking for dinner options, pull out a frozen packet of pesto to add as chicken/fish marinade or pasta sauce.
I'm a water collector. Kisses to mother earth.
I have waited and wanted. So thrilled for my rain barrel!

Taco Seasoning. You can do it.
Taco night and you are out of seasoning? Make your own - ingredients are just inside your cabinet....
You can substitute onion powder for freshly chopped onion. Also, I sometimes use garlic salt (double the amount above) and eliminate the sea salt. Lots of variations can be made above but no more packets to purchase for taco seasoning. I hate buying things and wasting packaging when the ingredients are just inside my cabinets. Just be sure to seal left over seasoning well and make extra for later :). Enjoy!
1 tablespoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon black pepper

"I" is now "WE"? How'd that happen?
iPhone and bicycle
Saturday night Ben and I went to an eclectic bar, Sister Louisa's Church and Ping Pong Emporium, down the street from our house. We went out pretty late because Anne, Ben's sister, was in town from NYC for a wedding. The night was fun and full of chit chatting and picking Anne's brain about her recent move to THE CITY. Then... I realized my iPhone was missing from the bar. Long story short - we tracked my phone with a tracking app I had uploaded. It was late. We were ready for bed. My phone was sitting in an apartment complex... I thought - let's go to bed and deal with it in the morning. Ben had other plans. I wake in the morning to discover while I was asleep, he was with the police knocking on doors of the apartment complex where MY phone had been tracked. He did this until 6 a.m. all because he knew I could not replace the pictures on my phone. No luck. I was a little upset because I had been looking forward to going to church on Sunday and with little sleep, Ben was not going to make it. I quickly remembered it was indeed my phone he was looking for, not his. How could I be mad? My newly huzzzzband (so fun to say that way) stayed up all night to look after me?
Today I get home from work, Ben's phone beeps, I look down to hand it to him, and see a text. The text is from our friend who owns a bike shop in our neighborhood, Loose Nuts Cycles. He and Ben love to talk bikes and cars (two of Ben's passions... um wait - obsessions). The text reads, " John Doe is in the shop checking out your bike." I turn to Ben and say, "what bike?" For those of you that know Ben and I, we have NINE BIKES (down from 11). His big eyes look at me and he begins to tell me there is a bike at the shop that he has been wanting to buy for a few months. Its a great deal. Exactly what he wants. Fits perfect. I begin to remind him that we are saving our money for our new fence, a patio, on and on. Then it hits me!!! The night before he had decided to put a gazillion (okay - exaggeration) bicycle parts and a bike on ebay to sale. He stayed up until midnight working on uploading pics and writing descriptions. Although trading bike parts, selling, and buying on ebay are a weekly occurance in our home - last night was INSANE and there was a mission. Ben was on a mission. I was not.
We have been married now for a little less than two months. Ben, 32, and I, 29 (just shy of 30, but TWENTY-NINE) when we married. We have been singles, living on our own, making our own decisions, making our own money, looking out for number one - ourselves. I. I. I. I. I. Get the point?
Once I realized what Ben had been trying to do by listing a bike and bike parts on ebay, I knew he wanted this bike. I knew he was trying to make the money to buy the bike, and now - JOHN DOE is going to get it while Ben is waiting to sale his ebay items to pay for it. OH NO he doesn't. I tell Ben I have to run an errand. I hop in my car and get to that bike shop to get my beautiful big eyed husband his bike!
The moral of this story, while long and wordy. After 30ish years of looking out for I. Ben and Martha Jane no longer worry about I - I is now we. Realizations of our unity have and will come in many forms. This week it came in the form of an iPhone and a bike. My husband is now on a weekly Wednesday ride, with his new bike and I am a happy wife. WE are happy.

DIY - Candle Chandelier
4 years ago I purchased old chandeliers for $5.00 a piece at a furniture store. I striped the old fixtures of their wiring and knew I would once hang them when I owned my own home. I found candles to fit and had my dad add chain to attach to ceiling on porch.
Now I have a beautiful candle chandelier to hang over my outside table which adds elegant & romantic light.

Kites
My Dad loves to fly kites. Every year at our Walker family vacation he works and works and works to get the kite in the air for my nephews.
I have very fond memories of being a child and going to the church field behind our house on Brookdale Drive in Lyman, SC where my Daddy would work and work and work to get the kite in the air for Ellen, Mason, and I. Flying a kite is so invigorating, simple, yet so mesmerizing.
Just last week we were in Surfside Beach, SC for our annual vacation and I captured this sweet picture of Daddy, JL, and Walker with their kite in the air. A sweet moment.

Keeva - 9 months today
Keeva - our German Shepherd Dog, GSD, is 9 months today. We rescued her exactly 5 months ago. She loves to swim, obsessed with fetching tennis balls, chewing squeaky toys, guarding her mama (me) at night, following her Dad during the day, and annoying Lyla and Renny. She is excited about starting back to school next week - obedience school that is. Geez, I'm starting to sound like a real mom. We all love Keeva monk, except for Renny.
Fennel seeds
I sprinkled fennel seeds in my back garden yesterday from my neighbors plant. Hoping for at least one beautiful plant next spring. This rain sure is helpful to push those seedlings along. Fingers crossed this time next year I am posting a picture of the whimsical plant!

Valentine's - Fiance Style
This year's Valentines Day is more special than any other - I am celebrating my love for my FIANCE! We are going to a romantic dinner tonight and celebrated with one another on Sunday at the Willie Nelson Concert at the Tabernacle. I came home from work early and Ben surprised me with this...
I think it is so precious that he picked this out for me. This hand bag I would fall in love with at first sight but would never have bought for myself. So - a big Valentine's to say the least, but heck, it's our first and only Valentine's Day being engaged (and I do love hand bags!).
Vintage hand bag, previously owned by Laura Hartsfield.
